Maine coons: The Gentle Giants of the Cat World

🧬 Origins & History

Hailing from the rugged state of Maine, the Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Their thick, water-resistant coats and tufted paws evolved to handle harsh New England winters — making them not just beautiful but built for survival.

Legend has it they’re part raccoon (they’re not!) or descended from Marie Antoinette’s long-haired cats sent to America during the French Revolution. Whatever their origin story, Maine Coons became beloved farm and ship cats known for their hunting skills and friendly demeanor.
